There are a variety of ways teachers can actively involve their students in service-learning projects. One of the ideas for a project I had was raising awareness for world hunger and homelessness. This idea came to me especially as we approach Thanksgiving. There could be a variety of lessons created for students such as: learning the importance of nutrition in one's diet, researching facts and myths about homelessness, and writing informative essays to give the community ways to help the local area. Students could even participate in a food drive. This would raise awareness and help the local community, but it could also be integrated with math. Students could have a designated area in the classroom for a large graph. The graph could contain a class goal, and as the class brings in more items, the students can reflect and visually interpret their impact on the people in their local community. This is definitely a great topic to introduce as Thanksgiving approaches, and some simple suggestions to integrate service-learning into the classroom.
